RESEARCH

Dissertation

The standard account of linguistic agency in linguistic justice scholarship focuses on the instrumental role of language in communication and identity. Drawing from linguistics and feminist philosophy, I develop an alternative account which takes the articulation process as an integral part of linguistic agency and captures our intimate relationship with words themselves. This new perspective allows us to identify certain restrictions that nonnative speakers are prone to experience such as cognitive noise and alienation, which poses an impediment to their flourishing as linguistic agents and presents a new problem for linguistic justice theories. It also shows why, as opposed to the general opinion, new technologies will not solve all instances of linguistic injustice.
